Before you travel

Find helpful information on notifying your airline, travelling with battery-powered wheelchairs, and visiting the terminal ahead of your flight to get familiar with the airport experience.

Inform Your Airline

If you require assistance while travelling, we recommend you contact your airline at least 48 hours before your flight to discuss yours or your travelling companion’s specific needs. This ensures you will have the right support at the airport and during your flight.

Here are the contact details of the major airlines that fly from Gold Coast Airport.

If you require assistance or do not fly often then we suggest arriving about 2 hours before your flight. This gives you plenty of time to check-in and go through security screening, helping you have a more relaxing time.

Battery-powered Wheelchairs

If you use a battery-powered wheelchair or mobility aid, you need to notify and discuss with your airline as early as possible before your flight. You need to allow enough time before boarding to prepare your wheelchair to be carried safely in the baggage hold of the aircraft. You should carry details of the type of battery in use (non-spillable (Gel type or Sealed Lead Acid) or Lithium-ion battery), and if your mobility aid is collapsible, as well as its dimensions.

For safety reasons, the carriage of battery-powered wheelchairs and mobility aids by airlines is regulated under national and international laws. Batteries generally cannot be carried in an aircraft’s baggage hold, however there are exceptions for battery-powered wheelchairs, provided the battery and mobility aid meet the airline’s requirements.
