Plane Spotting at GCA

Gold Coast Airport is a vibrant and busy airfield, welcoming more than 40,000 regular public transport (RPT) flights each year, along with an additional 50,000–60,000 general aviation (GA) movements.

From light aircraft to large jets, a diverse mix of RPT and GA flights take off and land daily, making it an exciting hub for aviation enthusiasts.

But it’s not just about the aircraft, plane spotting at Gold Coast Airport is an entire experience. With the sparkling coastline on one side and the stunning hinterland on the other, every landing and takeoff comes with a spectacular view. Whether you're looking for the roar of a jet engine, the thrill of a low approach, or simply to soak up the aviation buzz, there's always something to see.

We’re passionate about aviation and love sharing that excitement with our plane spotting community. So, bring your camera, find your perfect vantage point, and get ready for some serious sky-high action because at Gold Coast Airport, every flight is worth watching!

Best Vantage Points

Kirra Hill Lookout

Address: Kirra Hill, Coolangatta
One of the most scenic spots for plane spotting, offering an elevated view of aircraft arriving and departing against the stunning backdrop of Gold Coast’s pristine southern beaches.

Tugun Skatepark

Address: Boyd Street, Tugun.
The aircraft fly directly overhead at low altitude, making it one of the closest and most thrilling vantage points to watch takeoffs and landings. Whether you're catching a powerful jet roaring in for arrival or a light aircraft gliding over the skate bowl, the experience is unlike any other.

Bilinga Beach

Address: Bilinga Beach, just east of the airport
Perfect for catching aircraft flying low over the beach on approach while enjoying the sun and sand.

Adina Avenue (airport fence line)

Address: Adina Avenue
Adina Ave is a prime spot for morning spotting at Gold Coast Airport. The best location is just north of the T-hangars, at the Adina and Loongana Ave junction, where the fence lines the road with a grassy strip. Parking is convenient, and you can position yourself to capture your desired shot.

Plane Spotters Photography Competition

Gold Coast Airport holds a Plane Spotters Photography Competition annually, to recognise and celebrate the avid community of aviation enthusiasts across the Gold Coast and northern New South Wales region.

The competition is typically launched mid-year, with photographers of the top 10 images invited airside for an exclusive photography session in late July.

The photographers who capture the best two images on the day will win tickets to the Pacific Airshow weekend and be granted airside access to photograph aircraft flying in and out of GCA on the first day of the Pacific Airshow.

aboriginal-flag Acknowledgement of Country
